ARTpath 2020 - Call to Artists

Public Art on the Lansing River Trail

Project Overview

This summer, Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center is partnering with the City of Lansing for the third annual ARTpath River Trail Exhibition. More than three miles of the Lansing River Trail will highlight talented artists at twenty scenic locations within historic art districts from Old Town to Downtown, REO Town and beyond.

Last summer over 62,000 visitors enjoyed the River Trail during the duration of this project. Artwork of all media are eligible including natural materials, such as Wheatpaste and Moss-art, to murals, paintings, sculptures and other forms of digital and sound installations.

Individual Artists or collective teams are encouraged to create installations that are interactive and engaging with park visitors.  Artists may also submit artwork for multiple sites along the path, and will be granted $1,000 for each accepted submission.

2020 ARTpath Locations

SITE 01

Turner Dodge House

This historic house and grounds are located in the North side of Lansing in the historic neighborhood of Old Town. This site is a great location for a sculpture or installation.

SITE 02

The Grassy Knoll

This grassy knoll is just South of the Turner Dodge House in the historic Old Town Neighborhood. This space is just off of the trail and includes a shady area with a bench. This site is an excellent location for a sculpture or installation.

SITE 03

Buchard Park

This spacious, grassy area houses the Brenke Fish Ladder in the historic Old Town Neighborhood. This park is a great spot for a sculpture or installation and it will be home to two ARTpath works this year.

SITE 04

SITE 05

Oakland Trail Head

This site is South of Buchard Park and a short walking distance away from the fish ladder. This grassy area is near a trail head and a playground is close by. This highly visible site can be seen from the trail and from the street. This site is a great area to house a sculpture or installation.

SITE 06

Oakland Street Bridge

This expansive wooden bridge runs under Oakland Ave connecting the trail for pedestrians and cyclists. The architecture of this structure includes large beams that hold lighting. This is a vibrant and busy space as it connects historic Old Town Lansing to Downtown Lansing. How would you reimagine this space? 

SITE 07

Saginaw St. Trail Head

This site is just south of Saginaw St. This grassy area is expansive and there are opportunities to install artwork on either side of the trail. This site is near a trail head, it is filled with mature trees and a has a small bench. This site is the perfect area to house a sculpture or installation.

SITE 08

River Front East, Site 1

This large grassy park which overlooks the river is a popular area for visitors to run, cycle, fish or picnic. This park is East of the Shiawasee Bridge which houses ARTpath murals and across the river from Adado Riverfront Park. This area is expansive with mature shade trees and areas for visitors to relax by the river. This large site could accommodate a sculpture or installation.

SITE 09

River Front East, Site 2

This blank wall is housed on the West side of the river bank that is adjacent to the Adado Riverfront Park which is a popular festival park making this a highly visible site. This deck is a popular place for people to fish. This wall can be seen from across the river and would make a striking spot for a mural.

SITE 10

Under the Michigan Ave Bridge

This expansive space is under the Michigan Ave Bridge just South of the Lansing Center. There is direct access to the avenue above via the new spiral staircase making it a popular space for pedestrians. Last year two artists reimagined this space with an installation.

SITE 11

R.E. Old's Pocket Park

This small, grassy, pocket park is tucked in between the parking lots of Impression 5 Museum and the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. Do to the popular location is located near two family friendly cultural organizations an interactive sculpture would be a great option for this site.

SITE 12

Under the Kalamazoo Bridge

This space houses a large, long wall which would be an excellent space for a mural. The covered bridge helps to protect from the weather.

SITE 13

Grassy Hill

This grassy hill is north of the 496 Bridge and is just off of the trail. This space would be a great spot to showcase a sculpture.

SITE 14

Under the I-496 Bridge

This expansive wall lines the river trail and is an excellent place for a mural, wheatpaste or instillation. A 2019 ARTpath artist created a mural on one section of the wall which still exists today. 

SITE 15

Riverside Grassy Area with Bench

This area of the river trail has a shaded bench and slopes toward the river. This area would be ideal for a sculpture or installation.  

SITE 16

Elm Street Park Basketball Court

The basketball court is just off of the trail tucked into a neighborhood. This location is a great site for a mural which includes court lines to enhance players experience. Note this small basketball court is not regulation size.

SITE 17

Elm Park Bridge

The architecture of this space includes interesting angles in the wall. This is in between two well loved parks and is frequented by the community. This space could be reimagined with a mural. 

SITE 18

Elm Park

This park is a popular space for families and neighbors! This area has a large, concrete base that is a great space for a sculpture. Due to the fact that this is a popular space for families, an interactive sculpture or installation would be a great fit for this site.

SITE 19

Under the Cedar St. Bridge

This small bridge is near the South of the ARTpath trail. This bridge is near the Kwik Kar Wash and their iconic sign. There are two walls that are available for the artist to choose from. This site is a great location for a mural.

SITE 20

Grassy Area Near Elm St. & Cedar St.

This large grassy site houses large, mature, shade trees and two benches. This site is visible from the trail and from the street. This site has hosted an installation and a large scale sculpture in the past. How would you reimagine this site?
