12 | Curious Michigan

Mural  |  Sara Pulver  |  Lansing, MI

About This Installation

The mural is a curiosity cabinet, filled with treasures that many Michiganders could find right in their backyards, or even along the ArtPath trail. I was inspired to bring this idea to life while reading Nature Obscura: A City’s Natural Hidden World by Kelly Brenner earlier this Spring. Brenner’s thoughtful observations of the mini-worlds and vast ecosystems that can be found within an urban environment made me feel reconnected to nature even while it remained underneath a blanket of snow.

Artist Bio

Inspired by nature, humanity, and the exploration of how the two are connected, Sara’s work is playful and vibrant, with moody undertones. The presence of this duality in the Midwest provides her with a constant source of the material. As a multimedia artist, Sara works digitally, as well as utilizing more traditional techniques with acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints. Simple shapes, lines, and experimentation with patterns give her illustrations a whimsical feel intended to bring joy and reflection.

Information on the floral and fauna depicted in this mural, providing facts about each species, can be found in the downloadable handout, linked below.

Under the Kalamazoo Bridge

A 2020 artist created a beautiful, floral mural under this bridge which still exists today as a permanent installation of ArtPath. Look for this new art installation beside it this year.
