A SHOWCASE OF MICHIGAN ARTISTS
Reflecting upon Lansing Art Gallery’s 50th Anniversary in September 2015 TIME|PLACE is intended to engage participants of all ages and walks of life with contemporary professional art inspired by time or place. Located one block from the State Capitol at 119 North Washington Square, Lansing Art Gallery showcases the art of Michigan artists.
Rebecca Ruth Hart is the associate curator of contemporary art for the Detroit Institute of Arts. She has served as the organizing curator for more than ten national and international exhibitions, including Shirin Neshat’s mid-career retrospective Detroit (2013) and Seoul, Korea (2014). A longtime champion of Detroit artists, Hart served as a curatorial consultant for Take Another Look at Detroit, an exhibition in New York City featuring Detroit artists at the Marianne Boesky and Marlborough Chelsea galleries (2014). Hart graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Williams College and a Bachelors of Fine Arts, fiber, from Kansas City Art Institute. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, fiber, and a Master of Arts in art history from Wayne State University, where she received the Mary Kirk Haggerty Award for art historical research. Her work has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Association of Art Museum Curators, the Joyce Foundation, the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, and the Metropolitan Life Foundation. As a juror I look closely at how artists craft an object or image and ask whether there is coherence between the artwork and the artist’s intent. Does the choice of media enhance the message? Does the level of craft (way of making) support this vision? Does the image or object include all that is needed and no more? The works on exhibition in TIME | PLACE each demonstrate technical mastery and a clear artistic vision.
Lansing Art Gallery issued an open call that resulted in hundreds of submissions. The wide range of entries for Lansing Art Gallery’s fiftieth anniversary exhibition, TIME | PLACE, is a testament to the gallery’s position as a resource for Michigan artists. The organization’s mission to artists of diverse educational backgrounds and professional development allows this exhibition to include a variety of media and vision.
I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity to serve as a juror for Lansing Art Gallery’s fiftieth anniversary celebration TIME | PLACE. I extend my congratulations to all the artists selected and to the LAG Board and Staff for sustaining the gallery’s excellence while supporting the visual artists in Michigan. This exhibition demonstrates the gallery’s strength as it grew from a group of six visionaries to a corps of hundreds, all the while enhancing the lives of the creative community over the past half century.
