“The Sleeping Bear Dunes area of the Leelanau Peninsula is an abundant source of inspiration for my art. We discovered this area about a decade ago and now own a small cottage near Big Glen Lake. The explosive growth of this area in recent years has brought visitors from around the world, who marvel in its open dunes, clear water and fresh air. My paintings attempt to capture the energy of place; brushstrokes mimicking the vibration of patterns in nature. I pause the visual experience for the viewer, allowing for immersion in the lushness of color, light and pattern.”
Carolyn Damstra is a full-time artist and illustrator, working out of her East Lansing studio. She also finds subjects in her own backyard; along the Red Cedar River in Lansing or during frequent travels.
This exhibition is located at the Michigan Economic and Development Corporation in Downtown Lansing.
