Summer Art Camp students learn and experience creativity in the professional setting of Lansing Art Gallery. Young artists will explore creative processes, techniques and materials with the guidance of trained artists. Each series of classes culminates in a student art show in the Student Gallery!

2018 Camps
Monday – Friday
AM Session: 9 a.m. – noon; PM Session: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.


Open to all skill levels.
Maximum class size: 15 students.
Cost: $100 for 5 half-day sessions.

Lunch Supervision (for all-day campers only) Students enrolling in both AM and PM sessions must have supervision during the lunch hour. Lunch supervision is $5 per day. Students bring their own lunch.

AM Camp: The Magic of Painting and Sketching with Teaching Artist Catherine Tonning-Popowich
Hey kids, how would you like to spend not just one day, but five days drawing and painting? Join us for a camp full of sketching and painting fun! At this camp, we will use journals to sketch our ideas and then turn your sketches into paintings using a variety of painting techniques. Collage and monoprinting will also be explored.

Have fun working with clay, fiber, paper and found objects to create your own robots, bugs and books.

July 23-27, Ages 7-12
AM Camp: Twist and Turn with Teaching Artist Carrie Byington-Oei
In this fun summer camp kids will stretch their imagination and learn a variety of binding techniques and explore surface design to create their own shibori dyeing project. Shibori is an ancient Japanese fabric dyeing technique that is known for using indigo dye as the primary dye color.

PM Camp: Tapestry Weaving with Teaching Artist Carrie Byington-Oei
Catch the wave and learn about warp, weft in this fun, creative weaving class. Students will learn the basic weaving techniques creating their own projects as well as, participating in a community weaving project.

Week 4: August 6-10, Ages 7 -12
AM Camp: Low-tech MineCraft Art Studio
with teaching artist Steve Baibak
Students will construct World of MineCraft components with traditional and non-traditional art materials such as paint, cardboard, and tape. Create small models of dwellings outfitted with all of the stuff need to survive a zombie mob; construct free standing figures that resemble the story mode characters, Iron golems, or monster mobs. Come craft, in creative mode, all Low-tech MineCraft class.

August 20 – 24: Ages 7 -12
AM Camp: Creating Clayworks
with Teaching Artist Tara Thelen
Clay is a wonderful way for students to express themselves in 3D! We’ll be sculpting all kinds of things — from fantasy figures to bowls and plates, and anything in between. Techniques in layer-building, smoothing, working with fingers, hands and sculpting tools, and creating balance and form in each claywork will also be taught. This will lay the foundation for expression, imagination, and lots of fun.

PM Camp: New Dimensions in Drawing! with Teaching Artist Tara Thelen
This course is designed to open up the wonderful world of line drawings! Lines, in all their various forms, will be used to create stunning artworks and designs. We'll learn about how line displacement techniques, geometric lines, line patterns, etc. create depth, form, structure and even 3D effects. We will learn about things like perspective drawings, portraiture, figurative art, and abstract art. We will get creative with contrasts, patterning, textures, and of course, lines!
