Summer Art Camp

Summer Art Camp is supported by our Education Center sponsor Michigan State University Federal Credit Union!

msufcu Summer Art Camp students learn and experience creativity in the professional setting of Lansing Art Gallery. Young artists will explore creative processes, techniques and materials with the guidance of trained artists. Each series of classes culminates in a student art show in the Student Gallery!

Monday – Friday
AM camp: 9 a.m. – noon
PM camp: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Open to all skill levels.
Maximum class size: 15 students.

Cost: $100 for 5 half-day sessions. If you have a Family Membership with Lansing Art Gallery, camp is only $80 per session! Use the coupon code MEMBERFAM at checkout to receive your discount!

Lunch Supervision (for all-day campers only) Students enrolling in both AM and PM sessions must have supervision during the lunch hour. Lunch supervision is $5 per day. Students bring their own lunch. (You may opt out of lunch supervision if you take your child to lunch.) Please adjust the quantity in your cart to the number of days you would like to purchase lunch supervision.

The Magic of Monoprinting

with Teaching Artist Catherine Tonning-Popowich
Explore the world of monoprinting – a unique form of printmaking that creates a limited number of images, resulting in one-of-a-kind creations. Students will learn printmaking using different materials including Gelli Plates, acrylic, and Styrofoam. At the end of the week take home cards, journals, and collages, as well as a newfound knowledge and appreciation for the printed arts!

Week 2: June 26 – June 30: Ages 7 – 12
AM Camp: 9 a.m. – Noon
Art Journaling with Mixed Media

with Teaching Artist Catherine Tonning-Popowich
Explore mixed media styles through art journaling. Using remnants of prints, paper scraps, and natural materials, you will create one-of-a-kind art journals and mixed media artwork! Take home your creations at the end of the week and continue making art in your journal after camp is over!

3D Sculpture and Installation
with Teaching Artist Lauren Nalepa
Students will experiment with a variety of sculptural media and explore the ways that 3D art forms exist and move in a 3-dimensional space. They will play with a variety of sculptural styles, including mobiles and installation art. The media that students will explore will include wire, paper, clay, and more! This class will culminate in a cohesive and collaborative mobile sculpture!

Mixed Media Arts

with Teaching Artist Jessica Kovan
This workshop will explore the fine art of collage. Incorporating a variety of methods including drawing, painting, smudging, stamping, and the use of found materials, students will use these methods and techniques to create personal and unique collages that focus on building a personal story.

Drawing Like Never Before – **SOLD OUT**

with Teaching Artist Tara Thelen
Learn drawing techniques that you’ve most likely never done before! Exciting new ways to play with lines that give dimension, 3D effects, and dynamic movement to your artwork. We’ll have fun with patterns and contrasts too. Drawing doesn’t mean just pencil on paper either — we’ll be drawing in all kinds of different ways, including with chalk on the sidewalk in front of the gallery!

Painting and Beyond!

Students will learn to paint with a variety of media including acrylic, watercolor and more! Make your art look realistic by adding depth, form, and perspective, then use your new found skills to express yourself through color, layer building, and painting to music!

Week 5: August 7 – 11 Ages 7 -12
AM Camp: 9 a.m. – Noon
Fun with Fiber

with Teaching Artist Jane Reiter
Begin the journey into the fantastic world of fiber! Learn how to knit with fingers, on a circular loom, practice embroidery, explore crochet, and lay a foundation for quilting! Share ideas and support in a creative environment, and gain knowledge of techniques and design concepts while creating pieces to go in an art show at the end of class.

Express Yourself Through Clay

with Teaching Artist Tara Thelen
Clay is a wonderful way for students to express themselves in 3D! We’ll be sculpting all kinds of things — from fantasy figures to bowls and plates, and anything in between. Techniques in layer-building, smoothing, working with fingers, hands and sculpting tools, and creating balance and form in each claywork will also be taught. This will lay the foundation for expression, imagination, and lots of fun!
