Michigan Made: 2018 Holiday Art Exhibition

Michigan Made | Holiday Art Exhibition | 2018

Q & A with Exhibition and Gallery Sales Director, Katrina M. Daniels

Join Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center in celebrating the opening of its annual Holiday Art Exhibition! This year, Michigan Made is an exhibition co-curated by our Exhibitions and Gallery Sales Director Katrina M. Daniels and artist Debbie Carlos that brings together local and Michigan-made art by established and emerging artists. It will offer an opportunity to shop for creative, unique holiday gifts but will also support local artists and the economy. I had the opportunity to interview Katrina about the exhibition and the significance of buying and gifting art during the holiday season.

Q: What types of art do you look for when you put together the exhibition?

A: “My co-curator (Debbie Carlos) and I were looking for a collection of work that would speak to a wide variety of tastes and price points while showcasing the best work from Michigan artists. We also chose work that would be wonderful for an investment piece or a small gift such as screen-printed tea towels, hand-poured candles, and miniature paintings.”

Q: What makes local and Michigan-made art so special?

A: “Michigan-made art is special because we have such talented artists in our community making exceptional work! When you support local artists and makers you are keeping the money in our community and supporting entrepreneurs. When you buy local you know that you are supporting someone in your community. Buying local is also sustainable and ethical because the work hasn’t traveled for thousands of miles to get here and we know our artists are working in safe working conditions and are making a living wage.”

Q: Do you bring in new artists every year?

A: “We bring in new artists every year and we ask the artists that we currently represent to bring in new work as well. As the Exhibitions Director, I travel throughout the state looking for talent for the gallery.”

Q: Why is art such a valuable, memorable gift to give during the holidays?

A: “Art is a valuable and memorable gift because it is created by person, not a machine, with thought and integrity. When you purchase art for a gift, you’re purchasing something that could become an heirloom for you and your loved ones – a special piece to be cherished for years to come. Purchasing art and something locally made is the gift that keeps on giving!”
