Matthew Boonstra works primarily with fabricated steel and cast bronze to create abstract sculptures. His body of work is a commentary on the effect of industry and mass production on contemporary life in America. His sculptures encourage viewers to reflect upon America’s past in order to improve the future. Boonstra often gains inspiration from everyday functional objects and recreates them with steel or bronze to make them non-functional. He earned his BFA in sculpture from Eastern Michigan University and is currently a graduate teaching assistant at Michigan State University, where he is pursuing his MFA in sculpture.
