Art Scholarship Alert Spotlight: Natalie Jenks

“Bodily Use and Refuse,” by Natalie Jenks, 2018

Natalie Jenks exhibited work with Lansing Art Gallery and Education Center as part of Art Scholarship Alert in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and was the recipient of the Sara Jane Venable Scholarship in 2016. Then and now, her work explores “girlhood, female desire and sexuality, and anxiety surrounding the potentialities that her own body presents.” Her primary mediums include film photography and fiber art, which she often combines.

Jenks says that the experience was “extremely beneficial” to her. She says, “In addition to the generous support that the Lansing Art Gallery awards monetarily to students, I found the application process to be beneficial in allowing me to learn from an early stage in my career as an artist how to apply for shows, the importance of deadlines, and curating a selection of work for a gallery.”

Since participating in Art Scholarship Alert, Jenks has gone on to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, most recently completing a semester abroad at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland. She continues to exhibit her work regularly and her artwork has been featured in a number of publication nationally.
